The tricky question
“What is your greatest weakness?” This is probably one of the most common and most stressful questions asked during interviews. So in today’s challenging job market, you need to make sure you manage this well to increase your success at interviews.
One memorable response a number or years ago from a clever chap when posed this very question… “I go weak near kryptonite.” I still smile when I think about that one.
So – what’s needed is a careful game plan to help you cope with the shortcoming query in a way that highlights your fit for a desired position. Fielding the question well demonstrates that you can take initiative and improve yourself. For example, as simple as it sounds, the weakness of ‘perfectionism’ for a role that requires delegation may not be the best response.
The key? Thorough preparation. Career specialists suggest you take stock of your weaknesses, focusing on job-related ones that won’t impede your ability to perform your duties. [For example saying you are a bad cook... won’t cut it.]
Rehearse your responses out loud so you can hear what you are going to say. Role play with a friend. Remember ‘fresh is best’ so make sure you don’t sound like you have memorised a script. And finally, as you review look for aspects you would like to change so you can continue to get better as you practice.
