Recently I have been enjoying dipping into the various issues of MindFood magazine which hit the shelves in NZ a few months ago. I especially like the headings for the separate sections of the magazine: Upfront/Society/ Wellness/Culture/ Food& Travel – this caught my eye as being quite natty and in touch with where we are at in the world.
To add to this, I met the Editor-in-Chief, Michael McHugh, and heard about his ‘very cool’ background in publishing, his desire to push the boundaries – and who, quite simply, had the following comment to make about the magazine… “Enjoy.”
Now, given the state of the economy and the way we may be feeling about our lives at the moment, I was particularly interested in reading articles in the May 08 issue, about the insights that a ‘genius’ psychologist had to say about ‘depression’ – a Dr Dorothy Rowe.
Perhaps depression is an all too easy term to describe a multitude of feelings and emotions …and not wanting to downplay the desperate situations that people do find themselves in (as the ever increasing, alarming statistics tell us) I took heart in the ‘top of the line’ comments that made sense… such as, ‘that at times the word ‘dispirited’ may be a better term for us to use’.
Another in this series of articles (by Belinda Corcoran) had 5 straightforward steps to assist us find a ‘balance’ in life:
1. Recognition – be really honest about what’s important to you in your life
2. Evaluate – where you spend your time (honestly)
3. Question – what is relevant in your life and what are the ‘must haves’?
4. Plan – formulate a plan of action
5. Time – live in the moment, enjoy life and engage fully with ‘right now’
Another encouraging comment (amongst a number that were) was the following:
“People have the ability to change the way they experience the world.”
So the question is – what on earth does this have to do with recruitment?
Well, these articles did make me think about the positive role that responsible recruiters can play, as people do decide they can take control, look for a better environment, improve their place to work, change their boss, improve conditions and team, morale.
For us, when we come across people who have decided to take full control and effect change, and engage with us fully to make something quite special happen – it is not only exciting but it’s also inspirational; it will make us smile, hoot the hooter, feel pretty damned good and at times makes us goose bumpy.

My pick for the month! (No, I am not being paid, I just really like the whole experience!)
