Green Green Green

We may agree or differ on views about global warming, sun spots and carbon emissions but one thing that is happening inside the organisations we work with, is the increased attention and desire for companies to “do the right thing” – and we have noticed a growing number of jobs or components of jobs attached to energy-saving and green solutions.

A study by Management Information Services Inc. (US based research firm) who have been tracking green jobs for two decades, sites that the new industries of environmental management and protection have created 5.3 million jobs in the United States alone.

They anticipate that by 2010, “green employment” will reach 5.8 million jobs and by 2020, a whopping 6.9 million.

Out of interest – one of the top 25 jobs between 2004 and 2014 is hydrologist. Among their duties is responsibility for clean water resources for humans and livestock.

Apparently the other career areas that will see significant growth are wastewater treatment and hazardous materials management.

Add to this the uptake in sales in the green-industries (e.g. energy suppliers, consumer-products makers) and it’s very easy to conclude that when industries grow like this, you can expect significant job creation.

Green initiatives are everywhere.

It is one of the areas now discussed regularly in vacancy briefings as sustainability seems to be top-of-mind for our clients.

Recent PSA agreements we have taken part in have requested information from us about our views and actions in this area

And I am thinking, that like us, more and more employers have discovered, particularly in light of ‘corporate social responsibility’ that “being green” is cost-effective in all kinds of ways. . .

AND – not only does it make the company more attractive to customers but to employees or potential employees as well!

Recommendation: make sure your sustainability / green initiatives are articulated during the hiring process. Add these to positions descriptions.
