We heard a new trend was happening around the world – where the ‘fashion keen’ are now ‘Recessionistas’. [Mary Hall, author of The Recessionista blog, defines a recessionista as, "a former fashionista on a new quest for fine items at an affordable cost."]
And then we heard about a newest addition to Nuffield Street in Newmarket that fitted this trend perfectly… Duchess on Nuffield.
Designed with the recessionista in mind, this is the brainchild of Anna McGaffin and her mother Judith (of Ludolph McGaffin couture). These two firmly believe that women don’t have to sacrifice their style because they are watching their spending. “I wanted Duchess to be an extravagant shopping experience – more Marie Antoinette than minimalist. Like the store interior, the fashion has a classic European influence and sophistication, but our customers are blown away when they see how reasonable the prices are.”
With all this in mind FROG was treated to a night of fashion at Duchess on Nuffield St; a night of glittering chandeliers, lush brocade drapes, urns overflowing with exotic flowers and a ‘Palace of Versailles’-inspired decor. And the most pleasant surprise was the price tags.
Not only was it a good feeling to be up with the trends, it was heartening to see people take a risk, make a mark, try something new! Good luck to Anna and Judy McGaffin, and to the Recessionistas amongst us – Enjoy!
